Why CSWE Accreditation Is the Only Program Credential That Matters:
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as the sole accrediting body for social work education in the United States. Graduating from a CSWE-accredited MSW program is the non-negotiable first step toward clinical licensure in every state. Without it, you are ineligible for the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examination, and therefore cannot obtain an LCSW, LMSW, or LICSW credential.
As of the most current CSWE directory, approximately 350 MSW programs hold accreditation across the country. Of those, a meaningful subset have held continuous accreditation for decades, some since the 1910s and 1920s when CSWE's predecessor organizations first formalized standards. Continuity of accreditation is one of the seven factors in our ranking model, because programs that have maintained standards across multiple review cycles provide stronger evidence of institutional commitment than newer programs still establishing their track record.
What the Job Market Looks Like for MSW Graduates:
The job market context for MSW graduates is favorable. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects social worker employment will grow 6% from 2024 to 2034, faster than the national occupational average, with roughly 74,000 new openings per year. Social workers held approximately 810,900 jobs in 2024. Wage outcomes vary sharply by specialty:
- Child, family, and school social workers: median $53,940 (May 2025)
- Mental health and substance abuse social workers: median $60,060
- Social and community service managers (common career outcome for macro-track MSW graduates): median $77,030

Scores are assigned on a 1-10 scale per factor, then multiplied by the factor weight and summed to produce a composite score out of 10.0. Programs are re-reviewed annually; accreditation status is cross-checked against the live CSWE directory each review cycle. If a program loses accreditation or moves to Candidacy status, it is removed from the ranked list.
What this ranking does not measure: selectivity, alumni giving rates, rankings from commercial aggregators, or subjective editorial opinions. We do not accept sponsored placements that affect rank order.
