How the MSW Program Finder Works
You don't need a school in mind yet. Tell the MSW program finder which track you want, how you want to take classes and where you live, and it does the comparing for you.
You Answer Six Questions
Your track, how you take classes, your state, the work you want to do, what matters most and anything else you'd like us to weigh.
We Read 350 Programs
The finder keeps the programs that meet your answers, then reads each one's listed concentrations, certificates and format against what you told us.
You Get Your Matches
Up to five programs, each with a match percentage, the facts behind it and a link to its card in our rankings.
What Our MSW Program Finder Compares
Your MSW Track
331 programs list an Advanced Standing track for BSW graduates. Choose it and the finder shows only those programs. Choose Traditional MSW and it shows every kind.
How You Take Classes
235 programs have an online option, and 51 of them have no campus at all. Field placement still happens in person near you, so a program's online option is only part of the picture.
Where You Live
Our programs sit in 50 states and territories, plus Washington, D.C. The finder starts with programs whose campus or home state is yours, then adds close matches.
Your Schedule
113 programs list evening or weekend classes, and 122 start new cohorts more than once a year. Pick either one in question five and those programs move up.
Choices Within the Degree
59 programs list three or more concentrations. 122 offer a dual degree such as public health or law, and 161 offer an embedded certificate.
The School Itself
62 programs sit at Carnegie R1 or R2 research universities, 85 have held CSWE accreditation for 50 years or more, and 58 are religiously affiliated, per federal data.

Which MSW Program Fits the Work You Want?
Therapy and Clinical Social Work
212 programs in our finder show a strong clinical focus, such as a Clinical or Direct Practice concentration. A CSWE-accredited MSW is the degree behind the clinical license in most states. See the clinical social worker career guide and our social work credentials.
School Social Work
74 programs show a school social work concentration or certificate. School roles can ask for a state credential on top of the degree, so check your state's rules. Start with the school social worker career guide.
Hospitals and Health Care
97 programs show a health care, aging or medical social work focus, and 60 offer a dual degree in public health. Read the healthcare social worker career guide to see where the work happens.
Children and Families
79 programs show a children, youth and families focus or a child welfare certificate. Our child and family social worker guide covers the roles and the pay.
Community Practice and Leadership
106 programs show a macro, policy, administration or leadership focus. That is the path toward running programs and organizing communities. See the social and community service manager guide.
Why the Program Finder Sometimes Shows Close Matches
Some states have just a few programs. 8 have only one in our data, and none has more than 29, so three firm answers can leave very few.
When fewer than five programs fit every answer, the finder lists those first, then fills the rest with close matches. Each one misses exactly one of your answers, and its card names it. Close matches in your own state come before any based elsewhere.
