Can you earn an MSW part-time?
You can earn an MSW part-time at 312 of the 350 master's programs in the CSWE Directory of Accredited Programs, which is 89% of every accredited Master of Social Work in the country. Only 37 programs list a full-time plan and nothing else, and at the other end 4 schools (Utica University, Regis College, Fordham University and Northwest Nazarene University) list part-time study without a full-time option at all.
That proportion changes the question worth asking. With nine in ten programs offering a part-time track, you are not hunting for one of the rare part-time MSW programs; you are choosing among them on schedule, delivery and how each handles the field placement. Every one of the 51 US jurisdictions, the 50 states and the District of Columbia, has at least one accredited program with a part-time plan, so geography rules almost nobody out.
The part-time degree is not a lesser version of the full-time one. It is the same curriculum, accredited under the same 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards, taught by the same faculty, and it ends in the same diploma. Only the calendar is different.
What does part-time mean in an MSW program?
Part-time in an MSW program means taking fewer credits each term than the full-time plan, typically two courses instead of four, so the same total credits are spread over more semesters. There is no national definition. Each school sets the credit load for its part-time track, and the figure that matters most outside the classroom is the school's half-time threshold, because federal student aid uses it as the floor for eligibility.
What part-time does not mean is fewer requirements. The total credit count, the generalist and specialized curriculum, and the field education minimum are identical on both plans. A traditional MSW still includes the full 900 field hours, and a part-time student with advanced standing still completes the specialized half of them. Our post on MSW field placement hours explains how those hours divide.
Part-time also says nothing about where you study. The directory records part-time, online and evening or weekend scheduling as separate options, and a program can offer any combination. A part-time MSW can be fully on campus, fully online, or a hybrid with occasional campus intensives.
How long does a part-time MSW take?
A part-time MSW takes three to four years for a student entering without a social work bachelor's degree, compared with two years on the full-time plan. Plans that use summer terms sit at the shorter end of that range. The program's own plan is the only reliable figure, because the number of credits and the way field education is sequenced both vary.
Advanced standing shortens the part-time route the same way it shortens the full-time one. A graduate of a CSWE-accredited BSW program can skip the generalist year, and 301 of the 312 part-time programs (96%) admit advanced standing students. A part-time advanced standing plan commonly runs about two years instead of one. Whether advanced standing is right for you is covered in our comparison of advanced standing and the traditional MSW.
Start dates matter more on a long plan than a short one, because a missed intake costs you months before you begin. 114 of the part-time programs admit more than one cohort a year, so a spring or summer start is often possible. Most programs also set a maximum time to completion, which caps how slowly you can go, so check it before planning a very light course load.
How many part-time MSW programs offer evening or weekend classes?
113 accredited MSW programs offer evening or weekend classes, far fewer than the 312 that offer part-time study, so a part-time label alone does not guarantee a schedule that fits around a day job. 103 programs list evening and weekend scheduling and 20 run a weekends-only format. 9 of the after-hours programs do not list a part-time plan at all, which usually means a full-time load delivered outside working hours.
- Part-time 312 programs
- Part-time with advanced standing 301 programs
- Part-time and online 219 programs
- Part-time with several start dates a year 114 programs
- Evening or weekend classes 113 programs
- Weekends only 20 programs
The gap between the first bar and the evening or weekend bar is the most useful thing on this page. Many part-time tracks run their reduced course load during the day, because that is when the classrooms and faculty are available. If you need to keep a nine-to-five job, look for the evening or weekend flag, or for an online program with asynchronous courses, rather than for the word part-time.
The 20 weekends-only programs are a short enough list to name: University of Houston, University of Southern California, Colorado State University-Pueblo, St. Joseph's University of New York, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Boston University, Northern Kentucky University, Sacred Heart University, East Carolina University, Case Western Reserve University, University of Southern Mississippi, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, University of Denver, Springfield College, Southern Adventist University, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Michigan State University, Marywood University, Colorado State University and Augsburg University. Weekend formats tend to concentrate a course into a few long Saturdays or Friday and Saturday blocks, which is efficient for commuters and tiring for almost everyone.
Which states have the most part-time MSW programs?
California has the most part-time MSW programs, with 23 of its 29 accredited master's programs offering a part-time plan, followed by New York with 22. Because part-time study is near universal, the ranking mostly mirrors how many programs each state has. The column worth reading is the last one, which counts the programs that also teach evenings or weekends.
| State | Part-time programs | Accredited MSW programs | Share | Evening or weekend |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California | 23 | 29 | 79% | 8 |
| New York | 22 | 24 | 92% | 10 |
| Texas | 19 | 22 | 86% | 7 |
| Illinois | 17 | 17 | 100% | 4 |
| Pennsylvania | 16 | 17 | 94% | 9 |
| Florida | 13 | 13 | 100% | 3 |
| Minnesota | 13 | 14 | 93% | 3 |
| Massachusetts | 11 | 12 | 92% | 4 |
| Michigan | 11 | 13 | 85% | 4 |
| Ohio | 11 | 11 | 100% | 2 |
Ten states with the most part-time MSW programs, by accredited programs offering a part-time plan of study. Counted from the CSWE Directory of Accredited Programs; the share column is part-time programs as a fraction of every accredited master's program in the state.
A state with many part-time MSW programs and few evening or weekend ones is a state where the part-time option mostly runs in the daytime. In that case an online program licensed for your state may fit a working schedule better than the nearest campus. Every state page in our state rankings lists the accredited programs there, with their delivery options.
Is an online MSW the same as a part-time MSW?
An online MSW is not the same as a part-time MSW, although the two overlap heavily: 219 of the 235 accredited programs with an online option also offer a part-time plan. Online describes where the coursework happens, part-time describes how much of it you take at once, and 16 online programs expect a full-time load.
The more important split inside online programs is synchronous against asynchronous. A synchronous online course meets live on video at a set time, often in the evening; an asynchronous one lets you work through the material on your own schedule within weekly deadlines. For someone working irregular shifts, asynchronous coursework is usually what makes a part-time MSW possible at all. The directory does not record this, so ask.
Neither format moves the field placement online. You still complete your practicum hours in person at an agency, normally one near where you live that the program approves. Our ranking of online MSW programs compares the accredited online options on outcomes.
How does field placement work in a part-time MSW program?
Field placement in a part-time MSW program works the same way it does on the full-time plan, with the same minimum of 900 hours set by CSWE's accreditation standards, but the hours are usually spread over more semesters at fewer hours a week. The schedule is set by the agency as much as by the school, and most agencies need their students during the working day, when clients are seen and supervisors are on site.
This is where part-time MSW programs succeed or fail for working students. Evening and weekend coursework is easy to find; evening and weekend placements are not, though they exist in settings that run outside office hours, such as crisis lines, residential programs and some hospital departments. Before you enroll, ask the field office how many part-time students it places each year, what share of placements offer after-hours shifts, and how many weekday hours a typical placement requires.
The other route is an employment-based placement, where your current job at a social service agency counts toward the practicum if the duties and supervision meet the program's standards. The 2022 standards allow it, programs decide whether and how to offer it, and the rules are covered in our post on MSW field placement hours.
How does part-time enrollment affect financial aid for an MSW in 2026?
Part-time enrollment affects financial aid for an MSW in two ways in 2026: you must stay at least half-time to receive federal loans at all, and from July 1, 2026, the amount you can borrow shrinks in proportion to your credit load. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, graduate students can borrow up to $20,500 a year in Direct Unsubsidized Loans and $100,000 in total, and those annual limits are prorated for students enrolled less than full-time.
The same law closed Grad PLUS loans to new borrowers from July 1, 2026, which removes the federal option that used to cover the rest of a graduate cost of attendance. Students who already had a federal loan disbursed for their program before that date can continue under the old limits for a limited period. For everyone else, a part-time MSW student taking half the full-time credit load should expect roughly half the annual federal loan a full-time classmate can take, until the Federal Student Aid office publishes the exact calculation.
In practice that makes part-time study and paid work a matched pair. Tuition per credit is the same on either plan, so the total bill rarely falls; what changes is that you pay it over more terms while still earning. Ask your employer about tuition assistance, and ask each program whether its part-time students are eligible for its own scholarships, since some awards are reserved for full-time enrollment.
Does a part-time MSW affect social work licensure?
A part-time MSW does not affect social work licensure in any state. Licensing boards look at whether your degree came from a CSWE-accredited program and whether you passed the relevant examination of the Association of Social Work Boards; neither the pace of study nor the delivery format appears anywhere in the application.
What part-time study changes is timing. The supervised hours for a clinical license only start once the MSW is conferred, so finishing in four years rather than two moves the start of that clock back by two years. If an LCSW is your goal, that is worth weighing against the income you keep by working through school. Our post on the LMSW and LCSW sets out the post-degree hours state by state.
How should you choose a part-time MSW program?
You should choose a part-time MSW program on three things the word part-time does not tell you: when classes meet, how the field placement will fit your working week, and how long the plan actually takes from your start date. Accreditation is not a differentiator here, since every program in the directory has it, and part-time availability is not either, since 89% of programs offer it.
Start with the schedule. Filter for evening, weekend or asynchronous online delivery if you will be working days. Then put the field question to the program in writing: how many part-time students it placed last year, and where. Finally, check the published part-time plan of study against the maximum time to completion and the intake dates, so you know the real finish line.
With those answers in hand, compare the programs that pass on outcomes in our national MSW ranking. If you are not yet sure an MSW leads where you want to go, our post on becoming a therapist with an MSW covers the most common destination.
