Iowa has 6 CSWE-accredited MSW programs anchored by the University of Iowa School of Social Work, the oldest and most geographically distributed program in the state. UI has maintained CSWE accreditation since 1951 and operates from Iowa City, Des Moines, and Sioux City, giving it the only multi-city campus presence of any Iowa MSW program, supplemented by online delivery since 2018. The UI dual-degree portfolio includes Urban Planning, a pairing uncommon among MSW programs nationally and suited for graduates pursuing housing, community development, and urban social policy careers alongside or in place of clinical practice.

The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls offers a dedicated Trauma concentration, one of the few in Iowa and aligned to growing demand across schools, community mental health, and behavioral health systems for trauma-informed practitioners. St. Ambrose University in Davenport offers dual degrees with Business Administration and Public Health from a Quad Cities base spanning both sides of the Iowa-Illinois border. Dordt University, operating entirely online from its Sioux Center base, offers four concentrations and a Christian Reformed faith perspective, the most specialization options of any Iowa online program. Clarke University in Dubuque and Grand View University in Des Moines round out the state with newer programs (accredited 2015 and 2022, respectively) offering Integrated Health and a four-concentration menu.

Iowa social work licensing follows the LBSW, LMSW, LCSW structure, with the LCSW requiring 4,000 hours of supervised post-graduate clinical experience, matching Kansas's relatively high hour requirement. Licensing is administered by the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing. Rural Iowa has persistent social work workforce shortages, particularly in the small cities and rural counties of northwest and southwest Iowa, where online programs at Dordt and the University of Iowa serve as the primary MSW pipelines.

Job Market for MSW Graduates in Iowa

Des Moines is Iowa's largest social work labor market. UnityPoint Health-Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children's Hospital, MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, and a growing network of Federally Qualified Health Centers anchor the healthcare social work employment base in Polk County. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), consolidated from the former IDPH and DHS in 2022, is the primary state-level public employer for child welfare, adult protective services, and behavioral health social workers. The Iowa Foster and Adoptive Parents Association and a dense network of nonprofit family services agencies create additional MSW-level positions in the Des Moines metro, which has grown significantly with corporate relocations in the insurance, financial services, and agriculture sectors that generate nonprofit and employee assistance program social work demand.

Iowa City is the state's academic social work labor market. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), one of the largest academic medical centers in the Midwest, employs medical and clinical social workers across inpatient, outpatient, and specialty care settings. UIHC's Children's Hospital and its psychiatric inpatient units are primary training and employment sites for clinical social work students and graduates. The presence of multiple university academic programs also generates counseling center, student services, and research social work positions.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa's second-largest city, has a social work labor market anchored by MercyOne Cedar Rapids Medical Center and UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital, alongside Linn County social services and a growing behavioral health sector. The Quad Cities metro centered on Davenport provides a bi-state labor market spanning Iowa and Illinois, with GenesisCare Health System, UnityPoint Health-Trinity, and Quad Cities community behavioral health organizations employing MSW practitioners on both sides of the Mississippi River.

Rural Iowa faces persistent social work workforce challenges. Many rural counties in northwest and southwest Iowa have documented shortages of licensed social workers across all sectors. The Iowa Child Advocacy Boards, county juvenile court offices, community mental health centers, and area agencies on aging in rural Iowa rely heavily on licensed social workers while struggling to recruit from a limited pipeline. Online programs at Dordt University and the University of Iowa, combined with UI's Sioux City site serving northwest Iowa, are the primary workforce pipelines for these communities.
